Deposisi asam terjadi apabila asam sulfat, asam nitrat, atau asam klorida yang ada do atmosfer baik sebagai gas maupun cair terdeposisikan ke tanah, sungai, danau, hutan, lahan pertanian, atau bangunan melalui tetes hujan, kabut, embun, salju, atau butiran-butiran cairan (aerosol), ataupun jatuh bersama angin.

Asam-asam tersebut berasal dari prekursor hujan asam dari kegiatan manusia (anthropogenic) seperti emisi pembakaran batubara dan minyak bumi, serta emisi dari kendaraan bermotor. Kegiatan alam seperti letusan gunung berapi juga dapat menjadi salah satu penyebab deposisi asam. Reaksi pembentukan asam di atmosfer dari prekursor hujan asamnya melalui reaksi katalitis dan photokimia. Reaksi-reaksi yang terjadi cukup banyak dan kompleks, namun dapat dituliskan secara sederhana seperti dibawah ini.
